Thank you so much for clarifying the distinctions among disorders and traits here. We’ve been muddying the waters and finding it difficult to focus on what is wrong so that we can solve a real problem with appropriate remedies. We need to do better than shooting blind to keep a democracy we say we cherish.
Very timely explanation. I would have included other leaders who show similar characteristics. I also would not give the impression that Trump's followers are like him. I don't think you mean the voters!
Some leaders might, hypothetically, display sociopathic tendencies or degrees of psychopathy as a counter to other leaders; acting out in other words. It's also, I think, vital to decouple the psychiatry from left and right wing politics. And, finally, we might consider the need for a degree of detachment in the execution of utilitarian policies. I don't think many govt policies are victimless so somehow there have to be limits which, in a democracy, would be naturally set by elections. I speculate that autocrats, even well meaning ones, are not likely able to set limits because they are fundamentally weak in the face of power coalitions within the regime.
Fully and well explained ! AND appreciated - when we are pushed well down, we must dust off and get back UP :) :) and as you say...what do we WANT the future to BE :)
Made it to the end of the episode. I am glad you have a hopeful view of the future. It is hard for me to imagine, given the amount of power they have successfully amassed. And the number of people who seem to WANT Christian Nationalism.
Exactly my thoughts on Trump - I thought it was dangerous to just laugh about him for a long time. I think since his new time in power this year more people can see it. Thanks for the episode!! (Also really unfair to people with actual psychotic disorders to be put in the same basket with people thinking and behaving like trump.)
This title matches what it seems to me. We are living in a Psychopathocracy.
